HOSTING A NAPD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

An agency may host a NAPD instructor course by providing class and track facilities (see "requirements" below) and at least five attendees. All of the attendees need not be from the hosting agency. The host may receive a "free slot" if there are five or more attendees. Class size is limited to ten.

HOW TO GET STARTED

You can start by scheduling a training date with NAPD. It is recommended to schedule at least four months in advance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Track Requirements

The NAPD course utilizes six different driving exercise layouts: road course, controlled stop, backing, braking (judgement and accuracy), perception/reaction, and "lollipop" activities. All but the road course activity, which can vary in size and length, are laid out according to set specifications provided in the instructor's manual.

This combination of driving activities requires a relatively unobstructed driving area of at least 400 feet X 600 feet. Large parking lots found at fair grounds, sports arenas, convention centers, and shopping malls, are often well suited to the task.

  • Classroom Requirements

Classroom should be set up for PowerPoint presentation. A VCR may be needed to show training videos.

  • Classroom Materials for Instructors

Instructors will need the NAPD PowerPoint presentation CD in order to teach the class. NAPD training videos are a highly recommended addition to classroom teaching.

NAPD owns exclusive rights to audiovisual materials used to instruct the Tactical Police Driving courses. These items are available for purchase: PowerPoint CD, training videos.

  • Classroom Materials for Students

A student packet is required for all class participants. Each packet contains a workbook, and writing pen. The workbook is a fill-in-the-blank study guide outlining classroom lecture. It also contains the "tear out" scoring sheets used for the track exercises.

Accompanying all orders of student packets are class roster forms, student exams, and serial numbered certificates to be issued by certified NAPD instructors. Instructors are required to mail or fax copies of the class roster providing the certificate number issued to each passing student to NAPD.

NAPD owns exclusive rights to all printed materials used to instruct the Tactical Police Driving course. Student packets are available for purchase.

  • Track Equipment for Instructors

Three of the NAPD track activities require the use of manually operated directional devices. NAPD is the sole source manufacturer of these devices. These items are available for purchase: Perception Reaction simulator device, Lollipop simulator device, and Controlled Stop exercise device.

It is advisable to have 200 traffic cones for NAPD training. Whereas most police departments have extra traffic cones available, they are often mismatched or less than ideal for driving course activities. NAPD recommends the use of 12 inch cones because of the easy use and storage, plus they do not contact the upper sheet metal of the vehicles. NAPD offers the best cones at a very low price. Twelve inch cones are only $5.55 each (plus shipping) with no charge for lettering. These cones will not split apart at the base, crack in cold weather, or stick together when stacked.

  • Recommended Student Class Size

Class size should correspond to the available number of NAPD certified instructors. NAPD recommends a teaching ratio of one instructor to every five students. Even so, a class of more than twenty students may (and often does) require additional time to complete the prescribed activities for each day.
